An appearance fitting harmoniously in the small scaled city centre of Breukelen was the most important criteria in a competition won by O III. The street level of this plan consists for a major part of shops. Housing is located on the first level, surrounding an courtyard which actually is the roof of the underlying supermarket. The courtyard is connected to the surrounding streets by means of the external staircases, making it part of the street plan of the centre. Differences in detailing and use of materials give the facades of the different stores and houses an individual character, thus creating street walls that in scale and texture are a continuation of the existing streets yet with a contemporary look.
